Heartwood is an example of hand carved relief originally executed on a condemned Union Street building in Easthampton, MA. The subject matter – a depiction of a tree’s growth rings – is inspired by the way nature slowly reclaimed the derelict site. The mural also recognizes the late Bryan Nash Gill whose prints and sculptures of tree imagery inspired us to conceive this homage. Heartwood was made possible in part by property owner Bernie Gawle, Easthampton City Arts+, and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Watch the the making of video here and see pictures on Flickr.
