I once encountered a moose while exploring the Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown, MA. At first, I thought it was a trick of the eye—perhaps light cascading through the canopy onto a fallen tree—but it was a moose standing just fifty feet away. We both stood perfectly still for thirty seconds, a rare moment where time seemed to stop as we observed each other. I created this piece to reimagine that forest ambassador wearing a crown of leaves and strawberries.

It was a delight to create this whimsical illustration of a frog bathing in a can of ink! The flies circling the frog’s head represent printer’s devils—historically, these were young apprentices in print shops who performed various tasks, such as mixing inks and fetching type. In my interpretation, the flies carry tiny pitchforks, attempting to persuade the frog to stop lounging in the bath and get back to work!

For me, the American Robin is synonymous with changing seasons and warmer weather ahead. I love their coloring, a striking coppery orange breast complimented by charcoal and ivory hues. The way they dart about looking for insects and tug earthworms out of the ground is incredibly fun to watch! The background of this piece is from Kuniyoshi’s “Swimmer and Pleasureboat.” Kuniyoshi’s work inspired me to layer multiple, semi-transparent color gradients to create a dramatic sense of distance in the background. Jays are so good at dispersing acorns that the group is widely credited with the proliferation of oak forests worldwide. For example, UC Berkeley’s Thomas Scott observed that an industrious group of jays can move “a forest worth of trees every autumn.” Scott cited an article, “Airlifting the Oaks” (Natural History 10/86:41-46), which discovered that “50 jays transported and cached 150,000 acorns in 28 days, about 110 acorns per day for each bird.” Mutualism of this magnitude, which shapes entire ecosystems, is truly legendary.

Vampire bats are the stuff of myth and legend. Blood is their sustenance, which they draw from sleeping mammals. In fact, the bat’s hearing is adapted to detect the rhythmic breathing that accompanies slumber. What’s more, vampire bats use their powerful forelimbs to walk, jump, and even run. I suspect this adaptation allows them to approach their victims stealthily and make a quick getaway once they have fed.

I combined the physical characteristics of a banded woolly bear caterpillar and an American black bear to create this hybrid animal. The ornamentation and color palette give the piece a storybook quality, reminiscent of an image found in an ancient manuscript. The rigid pose evokes an earlier time when artists drew fantastical interpretations of creatures from faraway lands. My favorite element of this piece is the long, swooping back, which guides the eye along the color gradient.
