This warbler, framed by a sunset over mountains, has a decidedly ukiyo-e flair. The background of this piece is from Kuniyoshi’s “Swimmer and Pleasureboat.” Kuniyoshi’s work inspired me to layer multiple, semi-transparent color gradients to create a dramatic sense of distance in the background. I combined the physical characteristics of a banded woolly bear caterpillar and an American black bear to create this hybrid animal. The ornamentation and color palette give the piece a storybook quality, reminiscent of an image found in an ancient manuscript. The rigid pose evokes an earlier time when artists drew fantastical interpretations of creatures from faraway lands. My favorite element of this piece is the long, swooping back, which guides the eye along the color gradient.

Crows are a regular part of rural life, thriving where I live. I frequently hear them outside calling back and forth to each other in the tall pines and see them sweeping the agricultural lands for food. One day, I saw a group walking among dandelions in a hayfield. The visual inspired me to create this artwork. I titled the piece Familiar Territory because crows quickly adapt to their surroundings, and their extended family groups are numerous.

I was inspired to create this artwork after learning that scientists have limited knowledge about narwhals and only recently recorded their vocalizations at length. My piece depicts two narwhals entwined, one framed by ice and the other by water. It is a poetic interpretation of the ongoing impact of climate change on marine wildlife.
