Artic Helix

Scientists have limited knowledge about narwhals and have only recently recorded their vocalizations at length. My woodblock print depicts two narwhals entwined, one framed by ice and the other by water. It is intended to be a poetic interpretation of how global warming endangers ocean wildlife and causes species to vanish from their natural habitats.

This original artwork was designed, carved, and printed by Lyell Castonguay. Ink is applied to a carved wooden block and hand-pressed onto Moon Peach Japanese washi paper. Multiple carved blocks layer colors, resulting in a dramatic effect. The artwork is signed, titled, and numbered in pencil by the artist.
